Blackburn Labour Party

Blackburn Labour Party is a completely democratic organisation managed by the wider membership. The General Committee, always referred to as the GMC (General Management Committee) and its' Executive Committee is responsible for the policy and direction of the local party branches.

Each electoral ward in the constituency has a local branch with its' own elected officials and each branch nominates representatives or delegates to the General Committee. Trade Union branches also nominate delegates to the General Committee, based on the numbers of Trade Union members in the respective branches paying political levy to the Labour Party.

At each Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the local constituency party, the whole membership of the GC will nominate and elect from amongst their ranks, officers and executive committee members for the ensuing year. The following officers were elected at Blackburn Labour Party AGM in March 2008: 

Bill Taylor

Agent: Sir Bill Taylor. Bill has acted as Jack Straw's agent for the past 30 years and is an invaluable member of the team. Bill is pictured in the link with his wife Ann and Jack, who presented Bill with a memento in recognition of his loyal service.

Chairman: Damian Talbot has  been elected as Chair. Damian is constituency secretary to Jack Straw, is a welcome and younger member of the team and has now been re-elected  as Chair of the Blackburn Party.

Phil Riley

Secretary: Phil Riley was once again elected as Secretary, a position he has held for 27 years and he also is an invaluable member of the team.

Treasurer: Mike Madigan was elected as Treasurer, a position that he has held previously as he succeeded Lord (Tom) Taylor as local party treasurer in 1974

Blackburn Labour Party, in recognition of the under-representation of women in society and in order to promote the women's cause has always appointed a Women's Officer, Donna Bowlay Williams (Contact Donna) was elected to this post.
